Kaliadem as a Tourist Attraction

Kaliadem Bunker

It is said that the Kaliadem bunker was built since the colonial era. The purpose of this bunker construction is none other than as a place of refuge when the volcano erupting. Therefore, it is not surprising that this one building looks very strong and sturdy, although it has been repeatedly hit by the eruption of Mount Merapi eruption. Only, the robustness of this bunker still cannot be used as a shelter.

In 2006, this bunker during the eruption was bringing victims, 2 volunteers. They were trying to use the bunker as shelter when the hot clouds hit in 2006, found dead in Kaliadem bunker located in the village of Kepuharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman, and Special Region of Yogyakarta.

After being buried for 3 years, finally, the bunker is re-discovered and carried out the excavation. The process of excavation carried quite dramatically. The reason, all the clues about the existence of the bunker location was also disappeared because of the brunt of Mount Merapi Eruption in 2006. For this bunker, it had been buried 3 to 4 meters of ground. At least, it took about 2 days or 54 hours to do soil dredging using heavy equipment. The road leading to the location of this Kaliadem Bunker was already buried in 1.5 meters by Mount Merapi material.

This academic bunker kept so much trace of the eruption of Mount Merapi, including rusty steel bunker doors with a thickness of 15 cm, bunker room filled by various materials eruption of Mount Merapi. In addition, there are also some remaining layers of Mount Merapi material still remaining to stockpile the bunker. When you visit this area, you are also allowed to enter the bunker.

At the front of the bunker, there is also an iron door that can be pushed if you want to enter the place. Inside the Kaliadem Bunker, there is also a small room. The size of the room may be the same as the size of a small seminar room. It looks like a semicircle, and lava turned into stone looks everywhere.

No lighting in the bunker except for a little sunlight. The more you dive, the more educational and touching traces of events you will find in this bunker.


Kaliadem Route

To go to Kaliadem destination in the village Kepuharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta, you can drive from several directions; if you are from Jogja, then you can travel through Kaliurang.
