Ramayana Ballet Prambanan is one of Javanese theatrical dance. The Legendary Story Plot of Ramayana Ballet
Generally, talking about the storyline of Ramayana Ballet art performances is all about the romance story of Rama and Shinta. In the first staging in 1961, Tunjung Sulaksono acted as Rama and Sumaryaning played her role as Shinta. For this art dance performance, the story of Rama and Shinta is taken from Serat Rama, while the Ramayana story is the most popular version of New Javanese literature among the people. However, both versions has essentially told story about the romance of Rama and Shinta.
Narrated in the ballet performances, Rama as a crown prince of the kingdom Ayodya was doing the odyssey with his wife, Shinta. In a journey through the Dandakan Forest, apparently Rahwana, the giant forest dweller, secretly sees Shinta and instantly falls in love at the first sight.
Rahwana, who is falling in love to Shinta, sent Kalamarica to turn into a golden deer to draw Shinta’s attention. When Shinta looked at the deer, she asked Rama to chase after it. Rahwana’s trap had run smoothly. Without thinking any longer, Rama immediately rushed to catch the golden deer. At the same time, Rahwana came out of his hiding place to kidnap Shinta.
Rahwana then brought Shinta to his kingdom, the kingdom of Alengka. It was just halfway through the road; he was stopped by a bird named Jatayu, who was none other than King Janaka, Shinta’s father. With its full of strength, Jatayu was trying to save his daughter, Shinta. Unfortunately, his supernatural power is still less strong than Rahwana’s. Unfortunately, Jatayu was defeated and Shinta was then taken to Alengka.
Knowing his wife was kidnapped by Rahwana, Rama rushed to go to Alengka. In the middle of his journey, he met a monkey named Hanoman. At that time, Hanoman was willing to help Rama to find Shinta and save her. Without thinking any longer, Hanoman immediately rushed to go to Alengka. Unfortunately, when he arrived at Alengka, he was immediately already waited by Indrajid, Rahwana’s son.
Then a battle of Indrajid and Hanoman cannot be avoided. Hanoman was defeated; the he was caught and burned alive. Knowing that incident, Rama immediately rushed to go to Kingdom of Alengka by bringing troops ape. A great war ensued in Alengka. In the war, Rama managed to shoot Rahwana by his archery. At the same time Rahwana shot by Rama’s wood arrow, Hanoman apparently still alive, immediately crushed Rahwana’s body to Sumawan Mount to hide the body being not easily found.
Great War was over, Rama and Shinta thanked Hanoman who has become a hero helping them. Rama and Shinta then live together and happy. This story is one of Javanese pride.
